HOW CLEAR IS YOUR VISION?

Glaucoma

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a combination of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye. Glaucoma can cause blurry, loss or narrowing of vision, light sensitivity, halos around lights, nausea, headaches, eye redness, and eye pain. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness when not treated.

To find out if you have glaucoma, you should receive regular eye exams. At EyeDrNow, we offer comprehensive eye exams, including measuring your eye pressure through tonometry.

Who Gets Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is most common in adults over the age of 60, however, it can also occur in children and young adults. Because some forms of glaucoma do not exhibit warning signs until at an advanced stage, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that everyone over the age of 40 receive a baseline comprehensive eye exam.

Age is not the only determinant of glaucoma. Your family history also plays a large part in your risk of developing glaucoma. Medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure may increase your chance of glaucoma. Individuals with thin corneas, extreme nearsightedness, and farsightedness are also more likely to develop glaucoma.

Glaucoma Treatments

Glaucoma damage cannot be reversed, however, there are treatment plans that can slow the progression once diagnosed. An eye doctor may prescribe eye drops or oral medication, as well as recommend lifestyle changes. Nutrition is believed to play a large part in treating glaucoma. A diet that is rich in vitamin E, C, A, zinc, and omega fatty acids 3 and 6 may slow the effects of glaucoma. Regular exercise and limiting caffeine can also help keep your eye pressure low.
